Eradication (2022) Review

Eradication - A Slow-Burning Pandemic Thriller with an Intriguing Twist

"Eradication" opens with a tense scene as a gas-masked couple flees through the woods, only to face a brutal attack. This sets the tone for a post-pandemic world where survival is paramount. The film centers around David (Harry Aspinwall), the sole survivor known to have contracted the virus and lived. Kept isolated for two years, his blood is considered vital for developing a cure. However, when David's wife Sam (Anita Abdinezhad) stops contacting him, he becomes increasingly concerned for her safety.

Director Daniel Byers, in his feature debut, showcases his background in shorts and documentaries through the film's matter-of-fact portrayal of David's isolated existence. Despite a slow start, the movie remains engaging, avoiding the pitfalls of other pandemic-themed films shot during the pandemic. While lacking a big budget for extravagant effects or a large cast, "Eradication" focuses on building suspense and maintaining a sense of intrigue.

As David encounters infected individuals resembling less-elaborate versions of zombies, the film takes a turn, delving into his growing paranoia and hallucinations. The tension mounts as David unravels the mysteries surrounding the archer who saves him and the increasingly frantic calls from Sam. The outside world's true state remains a question mark, amplifying the suspense and uncertainty.

Around the fifty-minute mark, Byers introduces a major revelation that propels the film into its final act. While not action-packed, the pace quickens, and a few genuinely creepy moments arise. Some aspects may leave viewers wanting more answers, but the film provides enough information to avoid a complete non-ending.

One aspect deserving clarification is the nature of the plague victims. David encounters one unaffected by sunlight, while others react like vampires, burning upon exposure. This raises questions about their identity and hints at a potential connection to Richard Matheson's novel "I Am Legend." However, "Eradication" does not fully explore this angle.

Despite its limitations in budget and a script written hastily, "Eradication" stands out as one of the better microbudget pandemic films. As a Tubi Original, it offers a measured pace and a lack of action set pieces, making it suitable for those seeking a slower, more atmospheric viewing experience.

"Eradication" is available for free on Tubi, and updates on its availability elsewhere can be found on the film's Facebook page. For viewers unable to access it, FilmTagger can suggest similar films to explore.
