Siya, released in 2022, tells the compelling story of a 17-year-old woman named Seeta, known as Siya, hailing from the village of Devganj in Uttar Pradesh. After enduring a harrowing ordeal of captivity and brutalization at the hands of a group of men, Siya decides to fight for justice with the help of her lawyer and family friend. However, the perpetrators of the crime hold significant power, and she also seeks to expose another influential culprit who enjoys reverence and protection.

Review

Tackling films that depict atrocities and crimes against women requires careful handling. The approach and treatment of such sensitive subjects can make a crucial difference in whether the film merely sensationalizes or truly reflects the reality. Siya, fortunately, falls into the latter category and stands as an excellent example of realistic cinema.

The film effectively portrays the consequences of being a survivor of gang rape for a young woman from a poor rural family, beautifully portrayed by Pooja Pandey as Seeta, aka Siya. Only after her family friend, the conscientious lawyer Mahendra (Vineet Kumar Singh), posts about her on social media does the case gain attention, compelling the corrupt police to rescue Siya. However, the nightmare for her and her family is far from over.

Siya delves into familiar territory, reminiscent of the Unnao and Hathras cases that shook the nation in 2017 and 2020, respectively. The film sheds light on the collusion between the police and politicians, who abuse their power to suppress the truth and oppress the marginalized. Despite evidence tampering and witness intimidation, the young woman refuses to cower, fighting for justice even if it puts her own and her family's lives at risk. Will her unwavering determination lead to victory?

Pooja Pandey delivers a remarkable performance as the protagonist, portraying Seeta as a simple, dutiful, and brave woman. Her character's journey is palpable, and her courage shines through even in the face of adversity. Vineet Kumar Singh shines as Mahendra, a humble lawyer who refuses to be intimidated by the authorities, emerging as Siya's staunchest supporter. The supporting cast also delivers strong performances, contributing to the film's authenticity.

Directed by debutant filmmaker Manish Mundra, known for producing acclaimed films like Aankhon Dekhi, Masaan, and Newton, Siya is a hard-hitting film that addresses crimes against women and the power dynamics that oppress the vulnerable sections of society. Mundra handles the subject matter with great sensitivity and sensibility, showcasing the barbarity without resorting to graphic details. The film also highlights the importance of a supportive and loving family, even in times of helplessness and fear. Siya's family provides a positive message of normalization, engaging in everyday activities with her, such as revising lessons with her brother, preparing her favorite food, and comforting her through massages.

The cinematography by Rafey Mahmood and Subhransu Kumar Das oscillates between picturesque, realistic, and emotionally stirring moments. While marveling at the visual aesthetics may seem inappropriate given the gut-wrenching subject matter, their craftsmanship enhances the narrative's impact. Manoj M Goswami's sound design complements the story effectively.

Siya boasts powerful performances, skillful direction, evocative cinematography, and an intent to provoke thought. It presents a straightforward account of a crime and the subsequent fight for justice, without unnecessary embellishments. It serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and resilience displayed by survivors, urging viewers to reflect on the societal change needed to prevent such atrocities in the future.
