Black Lotus (2023) Review: Action-Packed but Lacks Substance

Black Lotus, released in 2023, is an action-packed film that promises thrilling moments but falls short in terms of substance and storytelling. Directed by Todor Chapkanov and written by Tad Daggerhart, the movie boasts explosive sequences and an ensemble cast, but struggles to deliver a cohesive and engaging narrative.

The film centers around Matteo (Rico Verhoeven), a former hostage rescuer haunted by the death of his friend during a failed operation. Set five years later, Matteo finds himself in Amsterdam where he crosses paths with Helene (Marie Dompnier) and her daughter Angie (Pippi Casey), the widow and child of his deceased friend. When Angie is kidnapped by Gabriel Saban (Frank Grillo), a menacing mob boss, Matteo becomes the unlikely hero tasked with her rescue.

Black Lotus intends to showcase the physical prowess of Rico Verhoeven, a renowned kickboxing champion. While Verhoeven's action scenes are impressive and highlight his athleticism, the film fails to provide a strong narrative foundation to support his transition into acting. Director Todor Chapkanov, known for his work in the action genre, struggles to bring depth to the characters and relies heavily on explosive set pieces to sustain audience interest.

The performances in Black Lotus range from mediocre to enjoyable. Verhoeven, in his first major acting role, demonstrates potential but lacks the necessary polish to carry the film. The supporting cast, including Marie Dompnier and Pippi Casey, deliver adequate performances, but the overall character development remains shallow.

One of the film's shortcomings lies in its dialogue-heavy scenes, which detract from the action and slow down the pacing. While the last half-hour of the movie offers intense fight sequences and a satisfying climax, it cannot compensate for the lackluster build-up and underdeveloped plot. The decision to have the predominantly Dutch cast speak English with thick accents further hampers the immersion and authenticity of the film.

Despite its flaws, Black Lotus delivers on its promise of action and thrills in its final moments. Fight coordinator Radoslav Parvanov ensures that the fight sequences are well choreographed and visually engaging. Frank Grillo's portrayal of the villain injects a slimy charm that adds an enjoyable dynamic to the film.

In conclusion, Black Lotus offers an action-packed experience but fails to deliver a compelling narrative. Rico Verhoeven's debut acting performance shows promise, but the film's lack of depth and reliance on spectacle prevent it from reaching its full potential. While the last act provides excitement, it cannot salvage the film's overall shortcomings in character development and storytelling.

Black Lotus is currently available on digital platforms in the US, via The Movie Partnership and in July in Australia and New Zealand through Defiant Screen Entertainment.
