Called to Duty (2023) Movie Review: Breaking Boundaries in the Skies

Directed by Ashley L Gibson and written by Bobby Hammel, Called to Duty takes audiences on an adrenaline-fueled journey in the face of a looming nuclear threat. The film masterfully combines action, drama, and a powerful message about breaking down gender barriers in a male-dominated profession.

Plot

In a world where North Kiyung threatens the United States with nuclear attacks and missile tests, the U.S. devises a plan to strike back with the best-trained pilots. However, the Air Force makes an unexpected decision, relying on the Navy's elite fighter, Lt. Andrew "Bells." As the clock ticks down to the impending attack, the drama unfolds, and a remarkable story of courage and determination emerges.

Story

Called to Duty introduces viewers to a formidable air show fighter pilot unit comprised entirely of women. Led by the fearless Country (Jane), the unit includes Edge (Collesides), Riddles (Mosko), Riot (Star), Bear (Pangaro), and Wiki (Seelig). Despite their impressive skills, they face skepticism and condescension from their male counterparts who doubt their ability to outperform them in the skies.

After the unit goes to great lengths to prove a point, they find themselves suspended. However, their incredible manoeuvring talents do not go unnoticed by higher-ups, who recruit them for a critical mission. Lt. Harris (Baena) takes charge of training the unit, demanding that both genders set aside their differences to fulfill the mission.

Called to Duty weaves an action-packed and thrilling narrative as the female demonstration unit receives new instructions. They must overcome deeply ingrained sexist opinions and prove that they are equal, if not better, than the men who question them. The film delves into the complexities of war, challenging personal beliefs and principles in the face of an impending conflict.

The Cast and Soundtrack

The cast delivers excellent chemistry, particularly Susannah Jane and Cabrina Collesides, showcasing the strong bond of sisterhood despite their clashes. The actors' performances bring authenticity to the unit, making it feel like a tight-knit team. The soundtrack further enhances the movie's intensity, hyping up the audience during thrilling flight sequences.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Called to Duty is a powerful and empowering film, highlighting the resilience and strength of women in the military. It skillfully addresses gender bias and the challenges faced by women in professions traditionally dominated by men. The film's action sequences and drama captivate viewers, leaving them on the edge of their seats.

However, some viewers may find the lack of display manoeuvres during the actual mission a minor weakness. Given their importance during training, the absence of these manoeuvres during the combat mission may leave some longing for more.

Conclusion

Called to Duty soars to new heights, not only as an action-packed thriller but also as a poignant exploration of gender equality and empowerment. With its compelling storyline and powerful performances, the film captivates audiences from start to finish. Be prepared to be inspired as Called to Duty hits TVOD screens on July 1, 2023.
