"They Cloned Tyrone" (2023) Review: A Clever and Ambitious Surprise

"They Cloned Tyrone" emerges as a delightful surprise amidst a summer of lackluster original streaming movies. Directed by Juel Taylor and shot over two years ago, this film showcases a creative and witty narrative that weaves together elements from "Get Out," "Sorry to Bother You," and classic Blaxploitation films. Though it may not entirely stick the landing, the film's infectious fun, unexpected twists, and strong performances make it a captivating watch that shouldn't be overlooked.

The story revolves around Fontaine (John Boyega), an ordinary resident of The Glen, a seemingly average community. At first glance, Fontaine appears to fit the clichéd mold of a gritty Black drama protagonist, haunted by his past and engaged in drug dealing. However, the film quickly takes a surprising turn when Fontaine is shot and killed by a customer, only to wake up the next day seemingly unharmed. Joined by the street-smart sex worker Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris) and the flamboyant pimp Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), Fontaine embarks on an investigation that leads them to an unimaginable and impossible discovery—a secret operation manipulating their lives from behind the scenes.

"They Cloned Tyrone" smartly blends elements of Blaxploitation films with the intrigue of "Cabin in the Woods," as the trio of unlikely heroes unravels the conspiracy that keeps their community under control. Taylor and co-writer Tony Rettenmaier's inventive and humorous script, once listed on the famous Black List, propels the film forward with engaging momentum. However, the film's true strength lies in the exceptional performances of Boyega, Parris, and Foxx. Each actor brings a unique rhythm to their character, resulting in excellent comic chemistry and seamless collaboration throughout the film.

While the film thrives on its intriguing set-up, the final act's rush to deliver answers and resolution leaves some ideas underdeveloped. The exposition dump scene with the menacing baddie played by Kiefer Sutherland could have been better balanced with more fleshed-out themes about community and predetermined roles.

"They Cloned Tyrone" may grapple with an abundance of ideas, but it remains intact due to its outstanding ensemble and Juel Taylor's promising direction. The filmmaker skillfully employs cultural touchstones like "A Clockwork Orange" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" to create a fresh and unique cinematic experience. With this impressive debut, Taylor sets himself apart as a promising talent in the industry, ensuring his future won't be a clone of anyone else's. Don't let "They Cloned Tyrone" be lost in the vast sea of streaming content—give it the attention it deserves.
